The Weather $3.48 Perhaps because we can’t always predict it, and certainly can’t control it, our fascination with the weather never seems to wane. But despite our frequent powerlessness in the face of it, there is much we do know. The Weather takes a thrilling voyage to the heart of this phenomenon, that even in an age of air conditioning and artificial environments, is still central to the everyday life of the planet. From hurricanes and sandstorms, monsoons to avalanches, solar storms to the jet stream, The Weather showcases the most dangerous and dynamic forces of the weather. Created by veteran BBC producer, editor and writer John Lynch, The Weather explains the science of weather clearly and accessibly, illustrated throughout with color photographs and graphics from The Learning Channel/BBC television series. The Weather begins with the basic questions: What is the weather, and what drives it? The book then goes on to cover every global weather phenomenon, with an in-depth introduction and sections on Wind, Wet, Cold and Hot. The book is especially revealing on how humans interact with weather — how we’ve adapted to it, suffered from it, harnessed it, and, finally, how we may be inadvertently changing it. The final section, Change, is a look at the meaning of global climate change patterns. |

Change in the Weather $19.98 Mark McEwen?s strokes were anything but sudden. His symptoms led him to a hospital, where he was misdiagnosed with the flu. Two days later, on an airplane flight just hours before he finally collapsed, flight attendants and airport staff discounted his slurred speech and heavy sweating, passing him off as intoxicated. Misinformation not only delayed his treatment but nearly cost him his life. A candid, moving memoir, Change in the Weather traces one man?s recovery in the aftermath of temporarily losing some of his greatest gifts?his talent as a public speaker and his warm, witty exuberance?while his wife worked valiantly to care for their children as well as her seriously ill husband. Telling an ultimately triumphant story, McEwen also offers insights into the warning signs of stroke as well as prevention and treatment options. Though stroke is the number-one cause of disability among adults in the United States?and the third-leading cause of death?it is also one of the least discussed conditions, and insurance coverage often fails to meet the staggering costs of rehabilitation afterward. Change in the Weather signals a change in America?s mind-set, led by one of our most dynamic new crusaders for stroke victims and their families. |

The Change in the Weather $3.48 Is something going on with the weather? A record-setting heat wave that just won’t release its blistering grip. Balmy winter weeks followed by a sudden crippling snowstorm. Torrential rainfalls of rising frequency and force, deluging areas untouched by flood for decades. And coast-to-coast, a virtually endless parade of dramatically televised weather disasters–each seemingly more extreme than the last. Examining today’s headline-making questions through the authoritative lens of science and history, New York Times science reporter William K. Stevens’s The Change in the Weather offers a definitive look at the science of climatic change. He introduces us to the international community of scientists leading the effort to determine whether a new era of climate has already dawned, one in which the extreme will become increasingly commonplace in an ever-warming world. From the impact of our own behavior on the delicate balance that keeps our climate hospitable to the degree to which we’re too late to do anything about it, the answers and their implications could not be more profound. How did we get here? How bad is it? How much worse will it get? How dramatically will it change life as we know it, and how quickly? The climate-science community’s newfound consensus–that the earth is indeed getting warmer, and human activity is at least partially at fault–remains a topic of fierce debate, and Stevens helps us understand both the science and politics we’ll need to know in the coming years.Charting the "grand drama" that began with the formation of the planet and its atmosphere billions of years ago, Stevens reveals the patterns of extreme climate change that have always characterized earth history. He explores the inextricable link between the fate of humanity and the climate–from the shaping of human evolution to the devastation of entire civilizations–and our efforts to make sense of these vast forces beyond our control. And he both shows us these forces at work today, as manifested in melting Alaskan glaciers or distressingly brown New England autumns, and offers an informed speculative glimpse at what may be in store for the end of our new century. As we enter the third millennium amid unfounded predictions of apocalyptic weather disaster, the very real debate about our planet’s fate rages on beneath the clamor. An armchair scientist’s guide to the science of climate–past, present, and future–The Change in the Weather is an eye-opening and authoritative exploration of today’s world and tomorrow’s uncertainty. |
